See #920 (comment) Actually, would it be simpler and clearer to just promote WestCommandsType to some very basic but actual Python class? I did consider this, and gave it a brief try, but it felt like a much more invasive refactoring than I was comfortable doing, and that would further explode the size of this #920 PR (which as you said has evolved quite a bit). It most likely should have been a class from the very start tbh - _west_commands_list feels like a constructor, _west_commands_maybe_delist feels like a string representation, _west_commands_merge would be an elegant iadd.... Make sure to include the _west_commands_manifest_dirs in the class somehow - it could be that a subclass of dict would be most suitable for WestCommandsType.

tl;dr: west should offer and document a convenient and standardized approach to log from low-level functions and other "helpers" with neither: a (long deprecated) west.log global a WestCommand object - because there isn't always one around. A long time ago, logging used a global west.log. Globals cause problems, so west.log (and other globals) were deprecated in #149. More logging archeology in this comment: #999 (comment) As a replacement and fix, each WestCommand had logging methods for years. This has worked well... when you have a WestCommand around! But low-level "helpers" used by some west commands and west extensions generally don't need and don't have any pointer to the higher level WestCommand that very indirectly invoked them. Which is why Zephyr extensions have kept using the global west.log in many places for so long (in addition to the newer WestCommand logging methods in other places: wherever the migration was trivial) Depending on your PYTHONWARNINGS variable and o

West does not use remotes in the Git repositories it creates, it always uses URLs for fetching. But it configures a remote for the user's convenience with the name of the remote attribute in the manifest. In our manifest files we are currently using different remotes. And for our users it is cumbersome having to look up or having to remember the remote name of each project. Our workflow could be simplified if all the remotes are just named "origin". Also custom scripts could be made simpler if they don't have to look up the remote name first. Please add an option to create all repositories with the remote name "origin" (or what Git's global config value clone.defaultRemoteName is set to). This could also help #257
