Hidden Friction Signals

Unlinked PRs without issue context and changes that fail automated test suites face the highest review friction.

  • •1) Keep PR scope strictly aligned with the linked issue.
  • •2) Ensure local linters pass before opening a review.
  • •3) Maintain full test coverage for modified logic.

Top PR Submission Do's

  • •Ensure code complies with the project coding style
  • •Keep PRs scoped to a single concern
  • •Include context and link to the related issue

Top PR Friction Pitfalls (Don'ts)

Problem Statement Climate and environmental scientists keep their data as labelled xarray objects: fields such as temperature over (time, lat, lon), covariates such as elevation over (lat, lon), datetime coordinates, and many NaN cells (land/sea masks, cloud gaps, missing stations). GPJax only accepts a Dataset of raw (N, D) inputs and (N, 1) outputs. So every user has to write the same fragile code by hand: stack the grid; broadcast lower-dimensional covariates; turn timestamps into numbers; drop NaNs while remembering which cells they came from; after prediction, scatter the flat mean and variance back onto the grid with the coordinates restored. It is easy to get wrong without noticing: misaligned columns, a prediction grid encoded with a different time origin, or NaNs dropped from one array but not the other. It is also the main barrier to adoption for this audience. Predictions that come back as flat arrays can't be used directly by the tools these users rely on (xarray plotting
