look_at() solves the camera position for a given orientation, but the orientation is either whatever the camera already has or one of the named axis presets. Choosing a good direction automatically is a separate problem, and a well studied one. Techniques worth evaluating: Viewpoint entropy: score a direction by the Shannon entropy of the projected face areas, so the best view is the one showing the most faces at similar projected size. Vázquez et al., "Automatic View Selection Using Viewpoint Entropy", Computer Graphics Forum 22(4), 2003. Perceptual preference: a model of viewpoint goodness fitted to a large user study. Secord et al., "Perceptual Models of Viewpoint Preference", ACM Transactions on Graphics 30(5), 2011. PCA of the point set: cheap, and enough to frame an elongated molecule along its long axis rather than end on. Bonaventura et al., "A Survey of Viewpoint Selection Methods for Polygonal Models", Entropy 20(5), 2018 covers the field. This would fit as viewpoint="auto

As we ship MDAnalysis which can directly import a SMILES string, we could directly import that into the scene.

The lerp (average) cartesian interpolation scheme for trajectories puckers rings and makes methyl and methylene groups take on an umbrella motion. If a group rotates ~180° for a time step, this interpolation scheme will make an atom's substituents pass through that atom. Increasing the temporal resolution of MD simulations may help this, but does not completely solve it. This might not be possible to solve easily, since it would require interpolating in bond length, bond angle, dihedral coords.
